Oh Happy Day A great day is upon us. A day many of us have been waiting for since the first purchased election 8 years ago. A payment we all paid dearly for, in so many ways. It isn't that I think for one moment that one man, inheriting such a massive mess, with such gargantuan pressure on him can reverse years of war-mongering or magically up-end hundreds of years of deep prejudice. And I can't overlook for one second the fact that as a new day dawned, the rights of many were taken away with Proposition 8. But I do hope that this man, who shows all the promise of a turning tide in a positive direction, is given adequate time and space in which to fulfill his promise. There will be many who will be quick to blame and critique and shake their heads. Some of his most ardent critics will be those who voted for him, impatient for a change they feel desperate for. But that's not how it's going to come. It may take almost 4 years to undo the waste and senselessness of the last 8 years. It will take so much longer for deep change and reparation of so many things. But on this happy night, as we bid farewell to someone who had no business being President the first time [and shame on us all if he did get elected on the second time through]: be happy. Let the historical depth and power of what is happening in the USA course through you and fill you, because if nothing else, this moment in time, this happy day, shows that anything is possible. If Obama does manage to quit smoking during his first term in office, nobody on this damned earth has any business whining, "I caaaaan't quit smoking, it's a stressful time for me right now..." Baby, you can.
