Hellos and Good-Byes

Life has a powerful way of reminding us of her imperative to balance all things. Spring and fall display it in physical Nature: all the seasons do. And newspapers show us when they place the Birth and Death notices in the same section. First cry and gasp, duly noted; last breath taken, recorded with sorrow, all around the world, every day. It certainly doesn't help to ease the pain of a loss, nor can it diminish the bliss and blessing of a birth. Your birthday is the anniversary of someone's death, like it or not.

March 28 marks the loss of two very special women, and the very same date is the birthday of two other very special women still very much in the wild world, still busy making art and adding to their world. So it seems like the absolute best time to lean on a master, William Butler Yeats, as we acknowledge the ladies we've lost and the magic of very old friendships that go on and on in fine Aries style.

When You Are Old

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire, take down this book,
And slowly read, and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once, and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace,
And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars,
Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled
And paced upon the mountains overhead
And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.

William Butler Yeats, 1891
