Oscar Night The year that Terms of Endearment was up against Silkwood, my mom made me promise I would not throw the TV out the window when Streep lost. Apparently my mother understood the passionate nature of the child she had given birth to: no TVs were harmed and looking back, Shirley deserved the little gold man just as much as our beloved Meryl. I had seen Silkwood 5 times at our local cinema: I am pretty sure, looking back, the ticket taker knew a young woman in love when she saw one.
Because Monday is International Women’s Day, I’m really hoping that the movie Precious gets some sort of major nod. If you have not seen this movie, please do, not only because it is a thing of incredible beauty, but because if you do, more such movies will be made, and so on. The painful stories will be told, and we all rise when that happens. I am willing to bet good money that you have a Precious in your life. Find her and help her soar above the lousy hand she has been dealt. Even with a smile and a hug here and there: it will work magic.
While I would really love to see a female director receive an Oscar, because it never happens, I also hope Lee Daniels gets to walk the big walk tomorrow night. His work with Mo’Nique and Gabourey Sidibe and Mariah Carey [who has one of the most powerful moments in cinema when she walks off camera after an abuser’s accomplice justifies her choices] is stellar, and listening to interviews with this man, I am just thrilled that Sapphire knew a genius when he came into her world. Film rights for authors are always a crazy situation. See John Irving.
I’m somewhat overworked at the moment and the Oscars will be a treat and a half. Every time they roll around, I am reminded for some reason of living with my mom in our little safe haven on Laclie Street. My whole creative life exploded in that lousy little apartment, and I’m about to make good on those early days. Watching the Academy Awards is just too precious an act for me: it always has been.
